St. Stephen's and St. Agnes School is currently accepting applications for the role of Transportation Director.  The successful candidate will be responsible for running the operation and fleet maintenance program of our transportation system. The bus fleet at St. Stephen's and St. Agnes School provides service for our students and several other local schools to Alexandria, Fairfax, Arlington, and Prince William Counties in Virginia; Prince George's County in Maryland; and the District of Columbia. In addition we provide shuttle service from the Metro and between our three campuses. The transportation department is also responsible for providing busing on field trips, athletic trips and any other transportation needs.



  • Supervise the staffing of the Transportation Department to include:  hiring, supervising, and evaluating bus drivers, training of bus drivers in compliance with state laws and regulations; projecting staffing requirements in conjunction with bus routes and schedules.
  • Develop and implement routing, re-routing and scheduling of buses and other vehicles.
  • Confers/collaborates with representatives from agencies/departments on transportation matters and weather/road conditions.
  • Supervises the maintenance of 20 school buses and 7 other school vehicles.
  • Oversees the transportation needs of the school by providing personnel and transportation for field trips, athletic trips, and shuttle runs.
  • Prepares budget requests and monitors the annual budget for transportation and vehicle maintenance, to include purchasing of new equipment and supplies needed for efficient operation of school vehicles.
  • Prepares periodic reports on the efficiency, effectiveness, and future needs of the transportation and vehicular maintenance program.
  • Reviews and evaluates existing methods, systems, programs, practices, and procedures; develops and recommends change to direct supervisor.
  • Assists with preparation and maintains a variety of department records in compliance with local authorities, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Evaluates road conditions and makes recommendations regarding school closing due to weather and emergencies.
  • Provides excellent customer service including responding to questions/concerns from the parents, administrators, and the public.
  • Maintains records, files, reports and correspondence concerning maintenance activity and equipment condition.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Coordinates with administrators and other stakeholders regarding long-term transportation plans.   
  • Establishes student transportation fees on an annual basis.   


The successful candidate will have the qualifications listed below and be able to effectively work with multiple constituents such as, parents, faculty, school administrators both internal and external.



  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in business, vocational education, or a related field and six to ten years of supervisory experience in a transportation vehicle fleet management or fleet maintenance position.
  • Two years of administrative experience at organizational management levels, preferably in a governmental, public sector, or school division position.
  • Demonstrated skill in the analysis, development and application of budgets.
  • Functional experience with commonly-used computers and programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex ideas effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Experience as a trainer of vocational skills is desirable.
  • Skills in negotiation, conflict resolution, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Must be eligible for a Commercial Driver's License and/or obtain it within the first 6 months of employment
